WAR TROPHIES.
EXHIBITION OPENED TO-DAY
A vast collection of war trophies "arid other historical articles was displayed or public exhibition in the Zealandia Hall tins morning It is difficult, to imagine any article which has been omitted from this comprehensive list for it appears to ojnbraco almost everything from a. Gorman albatross” aeroplane to the tiniest pf uniform badges. Not the least, remarkable of the manv war relics on view arc th«se showing the ingenuity of the German in devising substitutes for materials which the British blockade made' it almost impossible for him to obtain. Such things as specially-devised spring rims to replace pneumatic tyres, wooden-'rimmed tyres for motor lorries, articles woven of paper, and many another similar curiosity, indicate how hard put it the German was. But it ss nnposs.b e to enumerate oven one-half of the valuable war trophies on view, and those are only part of the New Zealand Government s collection It gives some idea of their number, and their weight, when it is mentioned . that it. took four five-ton lorries to transport the exhibits from Napier to Hastings, At present the collection is loaned t( > ? a ' m e ‘.ton North for the purpose of assistmg hc local effort to raise funds for the \\ iliard Home and St. Helen’s Home Ihe greate. part of the money contributed by tins pro sent exhibition goes to these objects tho Government taking only a small percent age for tho Dominion Museum It is not on returned soldiers who will bo interested it the portfolios of war photographs'taken at tho front bv ollical photographers, as (here is no doubt these pictures will make a. strong appeal to the pub he. Inciden ally, it may bo mentioned that copies oh. these photographs may be purchased >- . f ma ll cost from tho Dominion Museum and no doubt‘of tho many who are certain to visit ,he exhibition there will bo some eagei to buv views of scenes m which once they figured. To-night the exhibition will bo officially opened by tho Mayor (Mr J- A. v’ h M.P.). Throughout tho morning and afternoon classes of school children were conducted around the various stand and the innumerable objects described to them.
