THE RIMUTAKA LINE.
A DEVIATION WANTED. There were some forty delegates present, representing various Wairarapa bodies, at a conference held at Greytown yesterday, called by the local Chamber of Commerce, to consider the question of the Itimutaka deviation, and what steps should be taken to have the line improved. The following resolution was carried: "That the railway over the Rimutaka, being admittedly inefficient and excessively expensive to work, and that a responsible ollicial statement had been made by a Government engineer to the effect that it costs six times as much to carry a ton of goods on the present line as it would do on a new line, it is advisable that we urge that a new route bo definitely decided upon by experts, to which all railway works shall in future converge." A committee was also formed to deal with matters of public importance in the Wairarapu. During the discussion one delegate said that "the Palmerston North people were not going to let the Wairarapa have all its own way in this matter.
