HEALTH OF THE CHILDREN.
FREE TREATMENT ADVOCATED. An announcement made in the House lliis week by Hon. ('. J. Parr, .Minister of Education, to the effect that free medical treatment was being granted to school children by the hospital authorities in Whangarei, Bay of Islands, Gisborne and Napier was brought up at a meeting of the College Street School Committee last night, when members expressed the opinion that it would be desirable to 'nave the same course adopted in Palmorston North in regard to both medical and dental treatment. It was pointed out that the children needing attention are given cards by the medical inspectors, which they can present a t the hospital. The chairman (Mi .). K. Gorrund): 1 think something should be done about it. 1 don't know how people with ordinary salaries can meet the expense required to keep children's teeth i>. order. Mr S. Sanson instanced a case where a child attending a -school ill Pahnerstoll North had been inspected and issued With a card stating the nature of certain dental treatment required. The father had the work done and in turn received a bill for Other members agreed tlii|t some system of free treatment was essential, and it 'was resolved to write to the .secretary of the Palmerston North Hospital and Charitable Aid Hoard pointing out what was being done in the four places above mentioned and urging the desirability of some scheme of a similar nature being introduced in this town.
