BELGIAN GIRL AND CHINESE
DUNEDIN, July C. There was a tense moment or two at the Poliee Court yesterday morning when the magistrate, I\lr J. li. Mar tholomew, sentenced a Belgian girl, Euill J)e Ciess, to he detained in (he Salvation Army Home' lor a period of 12 months. The girl is about 20 years ol a hut she looks much younger. She was charged with having no lawful visible means of support. The evidence went to show that she had lived, in Auckland with a Chinaman, named AA’ong Yen, for about seven months. The pair had then gone to ‘Wellington, where the girl had left Wong Yen to visit a friend in Dunedin. AA’ong Yen had, it was stated, given her TIU to make the trip. In Dunedin the girl had visited another Chinaman, and had been arrested for vagrancy. Wong V<-n had thereupon travelled from .Wellington to give evidence on behalf ol the girl. He said he was prepared to marry her. The magistrate, however, ordered her to lie detained in the Army homo. On hearing the sentence, AA’ong Yen, .vho was sitting down, fell forward on ids ,face in a faint, and the girl immediately rushed forward to his assistance. She was seized hy a policeman, hut struggel frantically to get away, and was finally removed from the Court hy two policemen. 'AA’ong Yen was carried' out and soon came to again.
