FOXTON’S NEW SCHOOL.
Speaking at Foxtou at the opening of (ho new,school Air Edward Newman, M.P., expressed' his. pleasure at the Minister’s visit to Foxton. Mr Purr had boon his bench mate in the House, and together with the Hon. Mr Loo, another of his bench mates, both hhd been elevated to Ministerial rank. /Dio selection of Mr Parr as Minister of Education was a wise one, and ho was well qualified for the position. Mr Newman, after congratulating the people ot Foxtou on the new school, referred to the spirit which had animated the ex-pupils who laid given their lives for Kiritr nd- country, and those who laid rallied to the Hag,, thus emulating; the spirit of their forefathers. Ho referred to the influence that good teachers-exerted upon the lives of scholars, and to the large number of school teach vs who had rendered splendid service at the war. He hoped Mr Parr would do his best to increase the pay of teachers, and so attract the best young men to the service. In respect to country schools, he was sorry to say that many families drifted to the cities in order to afford their children an opportunity of receiving more efficient, education. Under Mr Parr’s scheme he hoped that (lie country schools would receive more attention, and that the teachers in the country would receive higher pay and get hotter residences. Mr Newman referred to certain- evils of the present system, wlirh h<>-hoped would soon be* remedied, especially- insnffichnv of remuneration of teachers, small and insanitary school rooms, and too large classes, lie would give the Minister his hearty support o/i behalf of educational reform. Ho congratulated the Committee, staff and children upon their very fine school.
