WHITE PINE PRICES.
THE RECENT INCREASES
The recent increases that Inn c been reported in white pine foi buitei boxes and fruit eases are to be investigated by the Board of Trade as soon as the board lias tune to give to the mattei. The Hon. W. D- K. Mac Donald, president of the board, said on Thursday that the price of white pine has not been definitely settled yet by the board, but it would have to be considered. Members of the board were now on the West ('oast in connection with the coal inquire, and they were making inqtiiiies there ‘about, white pine supplies and prices. The investigation of the white pine matters would he commenced by the Board about January TI. On the question ol the possibilities ol using .substitutes for this timber, Mr Mac Donald said that there seemed to he some chance of the South island beech being found suitable lor some purposes for which white pine was now used There were great quantities ol this timber in the country. 'I he scheme advocated in some quarters of using other limbers with a a oneci j of white pine was not yet commercially , practicable.
