Mr W. Dobson has been appointed secretary of the Dannevirku Racing Club, vice Mr R. Takle, resigned. Private J. B. 11 ally, oldest son of Mr P. Hally, of the Board of Trade, has been killed in action. Ho was only 20 years of ago when lie left on active service.

cable advice that his son, R/lm. Robert Tait, Ims been wounded in the lighting in France on October 12th, and has been admitted to a hospital in Knglaml. Mr Briggs, of the Hansard staff, Wellington, will take up the position, of secretary

of (he Wellington Appeal Board next week and Mr A. E. Burr, the present secretary will resume his duties in the postal ser vice at Gisborne.

virke lire. -Mrs il. D. Larson, of Ada street, Palmerston, has received a cable stating that her son, Rifleman 11. Larsen, was wounded on October 12, 1917. Rifleman Larson received the Distinguished Service Modal in tho Battle of Messines. Lieut, E.' A. Porritt, who has won tho Victoria Cross, is a son of Mr Porritt, barrister, of Paeroa, and a nephew of Mr 0. il. Porritt, of Palmerston North. Ho was a member of the representative team of New Zealanders who took part in the drilling and shooting competitions in Canada a year or two before tho war started. Mr G. D, Greenwood, of Teviotdale, has received advice that his only daughter, Mrs Ramsay, has been awarded tho Frond) Mcdaille d’ Efonnenr for her valuable work in tho French military hospitals. Mrs Hamsay is the wife of Major Ramsay, who left on active service with the Victorian contingent of the First Australian Expeditionary Force.

The Herald reports tho death of Captain R. 11. Lowe, killed in action in France. Captain Lowe was a brother of Mrs L. 11. Fenn. of Pahiatua. He pad served in the Imperial army since the beginning of the war, for about two years in the Home Defence Service with the artillery, and for the rest of the time in France, where lie was with tho New Zealanders. Bombardier 11. F. Cobb, who was killed in action in Franco on October 11, was the oldest son of Mr and Mrs Robert Cobb, of Otaki. He was well known in the Kumeroa district, having fanned (here from (lie time lie left Wanganui Collegiate .School until the war broke out, when ho enlisted ami went out with the Main Body. Ho was twice mentioned in despatches.

Private (Wattie) Vallendor, whose death in action was reported yesterday, was a son of Mr and Mrs E. Vallendor, of Rongotea. The deceased was 23 years of ago, and was very well known and highly respected in the Rongotea district by all who came into touch with him. His parents will have tho sympathy of a very wide circle of friends in their great bereavement.

Few families in the Dominion have made such sacrifices In the present war as have the McLaughlan family, of Taihapo (reports an exchange). Two sons, Privates P. and J. McLaughlan, had been reported killed in action, when this week came the news of another. Sergt. F. McLaughlan. lie vas wounded in the Somme push and laid aside for several months in hospital -in England. When ho was sufficiently recovered ho was offered instruction work in England, but his dauntless spirit carried him back to the front line trenches again, when 1 , unfortunately, he made the supreme sacrifice, A further son. Private M. McLaughlan, is

away on active service. The award of the Distinguished Conduct Medal has been made to Sergt. K. A. Goldingbam, son of Capt. F. S. Goldingham K of Palmerston North. The recipient of the medal enlisted with the First Wellington Infantry Battalion in February, 1915, and took part in the Apex and Blizzard engagements on Gallipoli, and was at the evacuation of the peninsula. He went to France with the first draft of New Zealand troops, and has been there ever since, having taken part in the operations around Armentieres, on the Somme, and at Messines. At La Bassevillo Sergt. Goldingham was buried by a shell. Sergt. Goldingham is an old Palmerston High School boy, and afterwards attended the Collegiate School, Wanganui. Private 11. A. Ponberthy, son of Air and Mrs 11. A. Penberthy, of Newbury, whose death took place at Ftaples on October 26. left wit it the 28th Reinforcements. lie was born in the Feilding district, and was well-known throughout the Mauawuui. Ho was esteemed for his high

principles and sterling character, and was ever rea.dy to lend a helping hand to forward any movement for the public good. The district lias lost a promising settler and the parents a devoted son. Another son, Sergt. Penberthy, is with the Third Battalion of flu l N.Z. Rifle Brigade, and lias been through the severe fighting without receiving a scratch. A third son is in camp with the 33rd draft, Mr and Mrs Penberthy have just received word that two nephews, Lieut. Gould, of Apiti, and. Pvt. S. Print, of Bunnythorpe, have been wounded in recent fighting. The death occurred in Wellington last evening of Dr. Albert Martin, who was well known there for many years as a medical practitioner. During the week Dr. Martin was about as usual and enjoying good health. On Saturday last he performed an operation, and lie afterwards told Dr. Ewart that in the course of it ho

pricked his thumb with a needle. On Wednesday lie was taken ill with acute blood poisoning, and death followed in the brief period of two days. The news will come as a severe blow to his relatives and many friends. Dr. Martin was born in Wellington, and was a son of the late Hon J, Martin. When a young man he went to England to study for the medical profession, and he was for many years at Guy’s Hospital, where he had a distinguished career. Subsequently he was for nine years in charge of Guy’s Hospital. Dr. Martin was 57years of age at the time of Ids death. He loaves a wife, a sou, and a daughter. Three of his brothers reside in Mart inborough—Messrs John, W. J.. and Arthur Marlin. .Mrs Robert O’Connor, of Wellington, is a sister.
