(Per Press WELLINGTON, Aug. 30. F. F. Munro, merchant, of Wellington, a native of Wcstport, who was plaintiff in, a slander action settled out of court last week.. announces his intention to donate the amount of damages, less expenses, to the Wounded Soldiers' Fund of the Duller district. It is anticipated the amount Will be over £3OO. AU('KLVM). Aug. ,30. At the Supreme Court John Eggetiton was sentenced to three years' liard labour for a criminal offence on «• girl under 16. A Whangarci deputation interviewed Hon. G. W. Russell, Minister for Hospitals, in reference to a proposal to utilise the hot springs property at Kanio for hospital purposes. The Minister said he could not commit the Government to the expenditure of several thousand pounds without giving the matter consideration. He would have to lie satisfied that further hospital accommodation was required in the Whangarci district. He advised leaving the matter over until the end of the present session. In the meantime he could give no promise.
Mr G. VV. Russell, addressing the Hospital Board, said the sick and wounded at tho front were first forwarded to Alexandria, Cairo and other places so that any that were soon able to return to the firing line could do so with the utmost despatch. Another section was sent to England. Up to the present it hail been supposed that men returning to New Zealand should be only those not likely soon to be able to get back to the front. After leaving tho hospitals they would return to their homes so that the strain u)K>n the medical men and hospitals of New Zealand would not bo as great as anticipated. He intended as far as possible to distribute the returning wounded to the hospitals nearest their own homes. Serious surgical cases must be dealt with at the main hospital and secondary cases at the smaller hospitals, where surgical and nursing staffs were ablo to cope with them. WHANGAREI. Aug. 30.
In iew of Budget proposals the shareholders of tho Whangarci Dairy Company hav-3 decided to empower the directors to mako donations as deemed advisable to the Sick and Wounded Soldiers' Fund, but not to the war fund, the limit of the donations to be £IBO, equal to Jd per lb of butter fat produced la:>t sea«on.
