RATING OF ENGINES.
Clo m KDITOI.) Sir,-Cut yon. inform ma through the medium of your valuable paper the correct difference of horse-power, according' 16 the R.A.C. system of rating, of two four-cylin-der petrol engine*, aay, one of 75 mm bore x 180 mm stroke, and one of 75 mm bora x 81 m-m stroke, both running under similar condition*.—l am, etc., ENQUIRER. June Bth, 1914. According to the Royal Automobile Club system of rating, there hno difference. The formula used for ascertaining the horsepower under tliis system is "HP equals D squared N divided by 1613." where HP equals the horse-power, D equals the bore, N equals the number of cylinders, and 1613 is a constant There is no need to take into account the atroke, which is evidently embodied in the constant. Applying the formula to the problem above, it will be seen that as the number of cylinders is the same in each engine, and the bore is the same, and the constant in each case does not vary, then the horse-power must be the came.
