RAILWAY MATTERS.
MINISTER AT LEVIN
THE FOXTON WHARF
(Pub Pbibs Association.)
LEVIN, March 5
The Minister of Railways vi-ited Lenin to-day and received deputations from the Borough Council and Chamber of Commerce, regarding railway facilities, the acquisition from the Government of Fulton wharf, and loeal matters. In reply, tie Minister intimated that Ihe in w General Manager of Railways is considering the whole question of expediting the train son ice on the Main Trunk lino, including the question of having the Auckland express stop at 1/cvin. Dangerous level crossings on railways were also being investigated.
Respecting Foxton wharf, be thought its acquisition could be secured if a spirit of reasonableness was shown. The Railway Department already had fixed it's telling price. but he did not think the Deportment could do as suggested by the deputation, and accept time payments in lit.ii of cash. Legislation to permit that would l>e essential iin-t. He suggested that with a view to expediting the acquirement of the wharf from the Government the Ha-bour Board should lir&t take a poll ol the ratepayers —yea, or nay—and. failing this, there would be the probability of objections being raised when the Bill was before Parliament, and a proviso for (he taking of such, m poll added to the Bill.
