STORM-SWEPT ISLANDS.

AUCKLAND. March 5.

A hurricane swept Shell Island and caused mountainous seas to ewanU) and Manahiki, the natives of which wen.' compelled to take to boats until the storm subsided. Considerable damage was done to crops. The islands lie very low aid wore completely submerged. ' Aitutaki Island was in the track of the storm, but sustained Jess damage. The storm arose suddenly, passing over the Shell group and spent itself on Cook Island. An unnamed schooner, known to be in the vicinity of the hurricane, has not emcc been reported, and it is feared that she went down.
