AVIATION IN NEW ZEALAND.

MR SCOTLAND'S FLIGHT

(PlB PBEBB ASSOCIATION.! TIMARU, March 6. Mr Scotland left Timam shortly after 8 on his aerial flight to Christehureh. In. the preliminary one of the planes went wrong and lie landed on Quarry Hill, Fairvicw road, to adjust it. He away beautifully and sailed over Timaru, then took a line due north, flying at a height of 400 to 500 feet'. The weather was fine with no wind and the flight wa6 watched by a great many people. Word from Grari, 20 miles from Timaru. states that Mr Scotland landed there at nine o'clock. The air being very cold he became numbed and he thought it inadvisable to continue his flight. It is understood at Orari that the aviator is short of certain oil required for his machine, but may resume his journey at about 2 o'clock."

Scotland, the aviator, made an ascent from Tahuna Park, at Dunedin, en Saturday. It was intended to go up early in the afternoon but the weather was unfavourable, and a long delay occurred. By 5 p.m. most of the spectators who had paid had gone home unci others who had "free seats'' on the hills swept into the Park and surrounded the machine. Their "nerve" was something to admire, eays a Sun correspondent. Presently the men who had not paid toll began to chaff, and the aviator finally was teased into essaying a flight. He would go up, he is reported to have said, even if he broke his neck. There was a great cheer as the machine, after en incredibly short run, left the grass—suddenly, strongly, noisily as a •tartled partridge. Then it sped gracefully seaward, with tome-thing of the suron*** of a falcon. The flight was a great suceww, the Caudron machine behavin e splendidly.
