Mr Kiuloeh Cooke asked Sir Edward Grey to enquire in the Commons whether Australia would accept the responsibility of the administration of the New Hebrides. vSir Edward Grey said it was impossible to make the suggestion without asking whether they would themselves undertake the purchase or make an exchange of territory. Received March 5, 9.30 a.m. LONDON, March 4. Hon. F. D. Acland (Parliamentary "Under-Secretary for Foreign Affairs) informed Mr Johnson Hicks that pourparlers had opened with France towards a conference to discuss details regarding the New Hebrides. AUSTRALIA WILLING TO PURCHASE FRENCH INTERESTS. Received March 5, 10.0 a.m SYDNEY, March 5. Representations have been made to Mr Massey by the Presbyterian Missions Board of Australia, asking the Dominion to use its influence in supporting a protest to Hon. L. Harcourt regarding the New Hebrides.
Kef erring to the cabled suggestion that Australia should 'acquire the French rights in the New Hebrides bv purchase, Hon. Mr Glynn said the Commonwealth was prepared to meet any opportunity of settling the question on lines honourable to the two nations concerned, whether it involved pecuniary or other methods of adjustment.
