While working in bus office this af«rnoon, Stanley Rickards. secretary of e new Waterside Workers' I'nion at Auckland, was violently attacked by a man who said he had been rejected by the new union. The secretary replied that his application was not in. Suddenly the man clutched Rickards' throat, and a violent strugglo ensued. Rickards was almost exhausted when men arrived and dragged off his assailant who escaped, but was later identified and arrested'.
