A London cable states that many distinguished artists attended tho cremation of the remains of Sir John Tenniel, the rioted Punch artist. His ashes wc>ro buried beside his wife, who died sixty roars before. Captain E. F. Hemingw ay, who was well known in Taranaki in the early "'sixtirs" during- t- native troubles, and who celebrated his 91st. birthday recently, is at present lying seriousJy ill at' las home at Auckland.
Mr 11. J. Manson, Xew Zealand representative at Melbourne, who is 011 holiday, and is unofficially accompanying. Earl Grey s party, arrived by the Maunganui at the Bluff on Monday. Mr Manson was a former resident of Palmerston Xorth. Mr Sydney Charles Gaseoigne, who has been en the staff of the Boys' Training Farm. Weraroa, for the past four years, severed ins connection with the institution on Friday, 28th February, to take up more important work in the educational world. A presentation was made to Mr Gaseoigne on leaving, and general regret was expressed that the institution was losing an officer who was liked by everyone on the place—both boys and taff. and one who had carried out his duties in a most efficient and exemplary manner. Much sympathy will bo extended to Mr G. J. Scott, of Palmerston North, in the bereavement he has sustained by the death of his brother, Mr John Wemyss Scott, which occurred at his home at Whakamara (Hawera) on Monday evening. The late Mr Scott was in his 72nd year, and leaves a wife and two sons to mourn their loss. A native of Dundee, he came to Xew Zealand in 1854, taking up his residence in Wanganui. He witnessed troublesome times with the Maoris in Taranaki. and with his brother, served in the Wanganui Firs- Class Militia, under Colonel Whitmore. He also participated in the famous siege at Weraroa in .1863. For a number of years deceased was chairman of the Hawera Hospital Board, and was an esteemed and highly respected settler of the Taranaki district.
Tiie Japanese are artistic to a degree, and Japanese art is being featured in a window display at Collinson and Cunninghame's. Framed water-colours, by Japanese artists, are shown. Each is a little gem of land or water, typical bits from Cherry Blossom Land. Each water-colour has the artist's signature. Priced from 2s 6d to 7s lid. — Advt.
