At the Methodist: Synod Rev. ('., 11. Laws, in the absence of the president, delivered the inaugural address. Referring to the strike, he taid the; wild words and the policy of enibittorment were wrong. The refusal to seek a spirit of honourable compromise and the attempt by mere superior might to humiliate and defeat, their brother men were equally breaking the law of Christ. He was convinced that half--dozen men chosen for their honour and capacity for impartiality could within a few' hours find a solution fJiat would commend itself to three-fourths of the people. Civilisation would bo bankrupt it nothing but. the methods of a mere pitiless process of exhaustion with its angry aftermath were open to the contending parties.
