TOI TO I AND CABBAGE TREE
(Pkb Press association.)
PA HI ATI 7 A. Sept. 3
As a result of observations and feeding tests Mr W. Wakeman, of Pahiatua, claims that toi toi and cabbage tree leaves, chaffed, provide a fine fodder for stock. Ho points out that either of the plants named can be grown on the wettest portion of any farm, and that planted systematically the former will produce a crop of from 50 to lfM) tons to the acre annually, while the latter will yield from 3o to o0 tons of leaves to the acre yearly. By cultivating these plants he maintains that any farmer can provide for the wintering of all stock he can graze n the summer months, and keep them n good condition. He also claims that flax leaves cut into short lengths about 16 inches from the root provide a good tonic for cows just calved, or at any time when needing a tonic.
Stcpo are being taken to bring Mr '.Vakcman's claims under the notice of ;he Agricultural Department.
In the early (lavs the settlers used toi toi very extensively for chaff.
