Received September 1, 9.45 a.m. BRISBANE, Sept. 1.

One of the most destructive fires for several vears almost totally destroyed Raymond's timber yards and sawmill at Newstead. A large quantity of valuable machinery and over a million and a quarter fret of pine and a quantity of hardwood were burned. The origin of the outbreak is unknown. The nre burned fiercely for several hours. The damage totals nearly £30,000, and the insurances are £7OOO. Seventy men were idled. The firemen had a difficulty in preventing the fire spreading to the large gasometer of the Brisbane Gas Company. SUGAR WORKS ABLAZE.

Received September 1, 10.35 a.m. BRISBANE, Sept. 1. A fire in the Mallaquin sugar refinery, near Bundaberg. caused £SOOO damage. The store-house adjacent, containing £20,000 worth of sugar, was saved.
