SAVED FROM DROWNING.
A BRAVE DEED.
An act of singular bravery was performed on a recent afternoon by Mr Harry Tanfield, of Kingsland, Auckland, in rescuing a ten-year-old boy from drowning. The boy, who is the son of Mr R, Brown, Kingsland road, was playing, with ayounger companion near a day pit in what is known as Cabbago Tree* Swamp. The pit contained about twelve feet of muddy water, and in endeavouring to re; cover a stick which had fallen into it, young Brown, who was unable to swim. lost his hold and fell in, Mr Tanfieid was summoned, ran straight to the spot, and without waiting to remove his aproji, dived in after the lad. The latter had gono down for tho last time, and only hie cap could be - seen. Mr Tanfieid was at first unablo to find the body, but diving a second time happened to be more successful, though the muddy water prevented him from seoing anything, The boy was apparently lifeless when brought ashore, but artificial respiration was applied by Mr Tanfieid, and tho boy came to in a short time. Mr Tanfieid was the means of saving the life of a email child some ten days previously. Ho was in his house when he heard cries, and going out found a' child with its dress n; flames. These he promptly smothered, thus saving the chili from almost certain death by burns. ,
