MANAWATU COUNTY COUNCIL.
MONTHLY MEETING. The ordinary meeting of the above was held yesterday. Present: Crs. J. G. Wilson (chairman), J. Henson, T. Masters, Barber, H. Hunt, and R. B, McKenzie. Leave of absence was granted to Cr. Kendall. CORRESPONDENCE. The following letters wero received: From Minister of Public Works, stating that he was having a report made on the application for a subsidy towards the reinstatement of two bridges on the Mangawhata road. From Government Advances Office, stating that tho special order authorising the Foxton Beach road had not been advertised in tho week preceding its confirmation.
From Land Department, stating that plans and specifications in connection with the Ohakea protective works had been forwarded to the Chief Surveyor to deal with. From District Traffic Manager, confirming the oiler of ten waggons for twelve weeks from September 1, and offering to build two for £IOO each. From District Engineer, offering to put in a orossing at Metcalfe's, near Bainesse, for £6. ■ From Health Inspector, recommending the carrying out of drainage near Anderson's store, Sanson. From Counties' Association, asking that steps bo taken to get pledges from political candidates in favour of a comprehensive Local Government Bill.—Councillors did not seem to think legislation necessary. From Mr li. Newman, M.P., forwarding a letter from the Hon, D. Buddo to the effect that it was too late to consider any application for a Coronation fountain at Awahuri. From Belmont Quarry Co., Wellington, offering to supply broken metal. From J. E, Nathan and Co., asking for information re tram. From J. W. Procter, claiming £SO damages for loss of horse, damages to trap, and personal injuries sustained through the tra'p being upset at a crossing between Sanson and Bulls—Legal advice to be obtained. From Georgo Edwards, Lady's Mile, Foxton, complaining of drifting sand. —It was explained that the sand drifted from the Harbour Board reserve. From T. Bowe, Moutoa, offering to lease road reserve—Land to be valued and sold. From Coker Bros., asking Council to form about 25 chains of road at Motuiti. — Overseer to report. From W. Rirchall, tram ganger, asking for increase of wages.-Left to overseer. From H. E. Wall, consenting to deviation of road at Moutoa.—lt was decided to take the necessary steps. From Feilding Borough Council, asking for a contribution towards tlio improvement. of South street from Awahuri road to South street reserve, the total cost being £4O. —It was decided to ascertain tho nature of the work to bo done. OVERSEER'S REPORT.
Mr Hick ford reported having had all necessary repairs carried out, during tho month.
Waiiolii.—Mr Cooksloy has completed his contract for cutting off the sharp corner and metalling on the Saudon-Awa-lniri road, The road between the Awalmri bridge at the hotel is very iveak, and 150 yards of metal is required on it. Rongotea,—The cost of building the concrete bridge over Sluggish Creole was £253 8s lid. The rut-liller has done good work on Banks' and Tompkins' Lines. The silt washed up above the Longburn bridge has been planted with willows, and the fences repaired. Sandon.— I The newly-formed portion of flic Oliakea Terrace road has boon patched up, and other roads trimmed with the road grader For the drain from MrAnderson's shop there woidd be a fall of 1 in 77, and the cost would be £l2. lit. Stewart Riding—The surfacemen have been cleaning out watertablcs, cutting trees and breaking stones on the Feilding-Awalnti'i road. Messrs Howard and Burno have promised to assist the Council in putting down a footpath in front of their properties in Wells street, Feilding. The two large wooden culverts on Lee's Line have ken attended to, one bciny replaced with a 3ft concrete pipe, and the other substantially repaired. Carnarvon.—Campion's and Taylor's Lines have been trimmed up with the road grader. The cleaning of the lower portion of the Makowhai creek has been let to J. Thompson, for 15s per chain. A good deal of metal has been put on tlio FoxtonSandon road between Oroua Downs and Taikorea and near Rongotea skiing. It would bo advisable to deliver metal at the tram siding this summer. Dangerous places on Rosina. Lino should bo filled in, and the road trimmed with the grader. • Kawa Kawa.—A contract, has been let for cutting off somo of the sharp points on the Palmerston-Foxton road to Mr Cooksloy for £l7 10s, and a. further sum of £SO should be voted for the work. The rut-filler is doing good work. Whirokino—The hill on Whites road should be graded and fascine the banks at a cost, of £ls. After this has been completed it should be clayed. , Tramway.-4000 extra spikes have been 'ordered for the Pukcnui extension. A i mile of the 401b rails will be down this month. Two men have been put on to I repair the tram bridges. Mr R. B. Suti ton is making good progress with the ' cottage at Rongotea siding. Outhouse and fencing will also be required. TREASURER'S REPORT. Mr A. K. Drew reported the balances of the various accounts to be:-General account, debit £3142 8s 4d; loan account, credit £358 13s 7d. Available for expenditure to March 31. 1912: Sandon riding, £97 7s 9d; Mt. Stewart, £169 5s lid; Waitohi, £169 10s Id; Rongotea, £162 14s 2d; Carnarvon, £195 4s 2d; Kawakawa, £333 8s 3d; Awahuri, £lB7 4s 9d; Whirokino, £ll6 17s Bd. TRAM REPORT. Mr A. K. Drew, Tram Manager, reported on the working of the tramway for August. A debit balance of £97 14s 10d is shown for the month, including extra labour for platelaying £54 Bs, and I in addition £255 14s 9d was expended on : cottage at Rongotea siding, sleepers, dogspikes, etc. The chief items of traffic I wore: Merchandise, 173-. tons; timber, i 21,400 feet; nietal, 315 yards; manure, '37 tons; fares, £4 6e 4d. The locomotive Rangitikei is not _ quite completed, although it is running on the ordinary trips. The Manawatu in at present undergoing repairs, the tubes; being expandi ed and new ferules put in in the fire- ' box end, as well as an alteration to the ! 6inoke-box, BUSINESS DONE.
