TOKOMARU.

Juno 17. Tho assembly hold their opening night last Friday woek and had a very good attendanoe, Mr T, Judd ably performed the duties of M.C., while Miss McKonzio suppliod the music in her usual high-class stylo. It lias boon decided by the committee to hold tho assembly fortnightly and learnore arc especially invited. A meeting of tho local ladies, ennvonod by Mrs W. Parr, jun., was hold tho other afternoon to mako arrangements for tho ladies' return ball to tho bachelors. Mrs R, Dawson was appointed secretary ■ with a strong committee to assist. It was also decided to hold the ball on July 7. Tho Debating Society had an enjoyable ovening in St. James' Church last Wednesday, at which the Rov. McKonzio presided. Mr F. Mcßao started the ball rolling by moving, "That tho introduction of machinery is detrimental to mankind," and mado a very interesting dofence, and was seconded by Mr L. Wilton. Mr Adams opposed tho motion and put forth 6ome very strong arguments, and was supported by Mr E. Moody in a moro or less jocular vein. Messrs McLcod, Griffiths, senr., Gundy i and Rev. McKenzio also voiced their opinions. On putting tho motion to the mooting tho negative side easily carried the day. The next meeting of tho society will bo given to reading of papers by members and should prove interesting. A combined meeting of the Shannon and Tokomaru Prcsbytorian Church managers was held in tho local churoh this afternoon, Rev. McKenzie presiding. A good deal of business pertaining to the monotary side of tho churches was transacted,

A team of local school boys journeyed to Shannon to-day for tho purpose of playing tho Shannon boys football. After playing a willing game, our boys proved the victors by 8 to 6.

All interested in tho welfare- of tho public hall aro invited to attend the annual general mooting, which will bo hold on Tuesday, 20th instant. Tho business to bo transacted is tho adoption of report and balance-sheet, election of committee- and general. A good attendance is requested. Somo two years ago a meeting was hold here to discuss the advisability of having a public library and reading room. Through thero not being any suitable building obtainable and lack of support, the movement fell through. Sinoo then a large supper room has been added to the hall (in which tho book's could j:e kept) and tho.need of a library is being raoro keenly felt, especially this time of the year. Many places much smaller than Tokomaru can boast of a good library, nnd-.it is to be hoped that the incoming committee of the public hall will give this matter somo consideration at an early date This boing Coronation year, and the election drawing nearer, no doubt a deputation to the right quarter would bring one of those Coronation subsidies which aro floating about to the aid of the Tokomaru library, and that should bo bettor than having to trouble Carnegie for funds at somo future date.

Tomukanui, Ltd., have closed down ono of their local flaxmills for tho winter months.
