PALMERSTON DEBATING SOCIETY.

, OPENING NIGHT. The Pal'mcrston Literary and Debating Society opened their winter session in a very appropriate manner last evening, when an onjoyablo social evening was held at Dustin's, the president, Mr M. Cohen) presiding over a very good attendance. Mr Cohen, in a neat opening address, commented favourably on the success of the.first year of the Society's lifcj end ho pointed out the groat strides and pro- v gress that had been made during the session. Several useful suggestions for tho next year's work were thrown out, and Mr Cohen hoped the members would oombine and make tho coming season as successful as tho last. Short impromptu speeches, the subjects of which'-were drawn,for, were <pen by Messrs J. 'Robertson (electioneering), M. Cohen (recitation), J. A. Nash (debating societies), while Rev. T. T. Thomas drew a blank and succecdod admirably in saying nothing in a most charming manner. A capital musical programme, interspersed the speeches and was contributed to by Miss Watson, Rov. T. T. Thomas, and Messrs J, P, Moore, E. S. Pecs and W. Fellows, all of which were warmly applauded, After refreshments had been partaken of a most enjoyable evening closed with ■votes of thanks to thoso who had assisted with itoms and to the chairman.
