.Lieutenant T. E. Escourt, of tho Royal Scots Greys, has been appointed extra aide-de-camp to Lord Islington. 'lion. G. Fowlda and Hon. G M. Luke, M.L.C., were passengers for the north by the New Plymouth express to-day. v Mr D. Buick, M.P.,'and Mrs itoick loft Palmerston to-day for Hawko's Bay. they will return to Palmerston at,tho end of the week.
Mr Leo Chateau, advance representative for Allan Hamilton's dramatic organisation, was in Palmerston to-day making arrangements for the appearanco of the well-known company on Monday and Tuesday next. On enquiry to-day we arc informed that Mr W. Wood, junr., who ./as ie recently operated on for appendicitis, was commencing to make satisfactory progress towards recovery. Miss M. Pole, who was.also operated on for appendicitis last week, is progressing, favourably. One of Taranaki's old identities and pioneers in the sawmilling industry T assod'away, when Mr G. A. Pearco breathed his last.. A quarter of a century ago he was ■ one of the best known men in the Stratford district. Ho was tne promoter of the first Sawmillore' Association in-Taranaki. Ho was also a.rrominont athlete in his younger days, .and the JYlanganui football team, .of 'which lie was a 'member, achieved an enviable reputation. Some fifteen years ago Mr Pearce went Home and was engaged as engineer and surveyor by an J^ ;lish , company having large interests m West Africa. Mr Pearce was the only survivor "of fifteen.after ono years location in that deadly ■climate. He afterwards became engineer for the erection ot tho big gas works in Auckland, and for tho construction of the; Auckland tramways. For the last three years he had been, manager of a very large sawmilling company at Mamaku, in the vicinity of KotoTita..
