ANNUAL CONVENTION.

, NEW PLYMOUTH, March 24. The W.C.T.TJ. Convention opened this morning, 81 officers and delegates being present. The President's address noted tho year's progress and expressed gratitude at the repeal of the CD. Act, the abolition of barmaids, prohibition of tho sale of alcohol to youths under 21 years, and that this year would be the first in which the vote for Dominion option would bo taken. It was urged on temperance voters not to rote for any member who ■would not support somo reduction of the three-fifths majority. Disappointment was expressed that while the bookmaker was abolished the totalisator was still licensed, and the wish was expressed that the totalisator should be submitted to a referendum. The address notes with pleasure the Indecent Literature Act, and urges that military camps be put under proper control. Justice has been granted to illegitimate children, who are to bear their father's name when paternity is proved, also that scientific instruction is to be given in our schools. The President combatted the statement that women got votes in New Zealand without effort. The women had worked hard and circulated many petitions in favour of the franchise.
■ The corresponding secretary's report stated that there were 8S branches, as against 81 last year. The membership was 2668.
A splendid record of tho work dono among the Maori sisters was reported. The W.O.T.U. is teaching the Maori women how to care for their homes and children.
