METHODIST CONFERENCE.
citizenship meeting;
(Pkr Pijess Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, Feb. 24. A citizenship mooting in connection with the Methodist Conference was hold to-night in His Majesty's Theatre, and was very numerously attended, the proceedings being enthusiastic throughout. His Excellency the Governor presided, and in an eloquent spocch referred to tho growth of Methodism in New Zealand. .He expressed a sincere hope that tho unity of all. Methodists in tho Dominion would be accomplished. Bishop Julius gave a thoughtful address on "The Church and our social destiny," in which he traced tho influence of Christianity upon , civilisation, and indicated tho directions in which the church could reform and uplift society. Hon. G. Fowlds, Minister for Education, spoke'on "The claims of local citizenship," in which he deprecated the proncness of the people of the Dominion to rely on financial aid from the State, and advocated, greater attention being paid .to tho beautifying of our cities.' "Our Imperial citizenship and responsibilities" was the subject of an eloquent and convincing address by Rev, P, W. Fairclough, in which ho pointed out the duties of the individual to the Empire. . On the motion of tho President of tho Conference the audience by acclamation accorded its thanks to the Governor and to tho various speakers.
