THE ANTARCTIC EXPEDITION.

GETTING READY.

(By Telegbaph.) ■ . (Special to "Standabd."}

CHRISTCHURCH, Nov. 8.

The scientists, officers . and sailors of Captain Scott's Expedition are working hard to get everything ready for the , departure at the end of month. There is an enormous amounV of work to do, but all hands" are willing; hands, and Captain Scott is the most willing of all.

Three of the geologists, Messrs Wright, Debenham and Griffith-Taylor, have left on a visit to Mount Cook, where .they will spend about a fortnight inquiring into the effects of glacial action. They expect to do some original work there and gain information which will be useful to them when they are in the Antarctic. •

Other members of the expedition are sorting out stores and having them placed in convenient positions, and others spend most of their time in the magnetic observatory in the public gardens here, where the instruments which will work in unison are being compared. Two huts, one for the large party at MoMurdo Sound > and the other for the smaller party in King Edward VII. Land, stand in skeleton form on the. reclaimed land at Lyttelton. They have beon erected in order to supply members of the expedition with experience in this, respect, and in view of the fact that there are few carpenters in the ship's company. This wo»k has been pushed on with much dispatch. Although the here show great interest in everything connected with the expedition they have left Captain Scott and his comrades alone, consequently there has been no delay, and Captain Scott is confident he will be ready to depart on his voyage before December let.
