BRITISH POLITICS.
IRELAND AND THE LIBERALS.
MR. BALFOUR ON THE NAVY. (By Electric Telegraph—Copykight.) (Peb Press Association.) Received October 20, 11.30 a.m. LONDON, Oct. 19. The British Labour members arc endeavouring to arrange a Labour Confeicncc at the same 'time as the Imperial Conference next year. _ The Master of Elibank, in his Belfast speech, said the Government was anxious for closer co-operation between the Irish and the Liberals. If they could confide in the Boers why not in the Irish? He hoped that as the South African settlement. was one of the glories of King Edward's reign, so the Irish settlement would be the bright star •of King George's rule. If the Veto Conference proved futile, the floodgates of bitter partisanship would be re-opened and would shake the very basis of all Government. Hon. A. J. Balfour, speaking at Glasgow. said the relative inferiority of the English fleet to the state of things which existed five years ago must be cured immediately, if not out of the finances of the year, then, by loans. "We must eonvincc the Powers of our fixed resolve to devote our last shilling and last man to the fulfilment of our Imperial obligations." concluded the Leader of the Opposition.
