The Public Works Committee reported that j h had decided to recommend the Council to 6ub-divide the old racecourse at the cost of the lessee, also to erect cow-bails, the latter to comply .with the health regulations.—Adopted. The Committee met again on April 1. They recommended: That Mr Francis' claim for alleged damage, to clothes by slipping into a drain trap near the Post Ofiice bo referred back to the Council; that in response to' Mr Canton's request tenders be called for cleaning out the : Kawau drain; the Committee could not ! recommend the purchase of a spraying machine; that Mr Just be informed that tho Council will consider the eurface drainage of the town when the estimates arc brought down; that Abraham and Williams be informed that tho outlet from West street could not be deepened, and that tho firm be recommended to pipe-drain the swamp and fill it in; that tho Railway Department be asked to erect a sign to Church street, near the sub-way, and to put down two tarred metal crotssways to the entrance to thn sub-way in Main street; that Mr C. R. Hewitt be informed the Council could not entertain his request to cut a drain on the side of Ferguson street to drain a swamp. Two tenders were received for cleaning grave! from the old intake, one at £73 and the other at £76. The Coun cil was recommended to decline both and do the work by daj' labour.—Adopted. ENGINEER'S REPORT. Tho Engineer reported as follows: — The new rubbish tip has been in uso for about three weeks, and from present appearances there is indication that it will, as anticipated, form an effective groin for the protection of a portion of tho river bank. Also tho small work authorised to be carried out in Vogel street is completed. The work of protecting the river bank below Fitzroy street is proceeding satisfactorily, and the amount voted for thework is nearly expended. The total length of bank protected will be 10 chains, the upper end being within 85 chains.of Fitzroy street. During tho past week tho work withstood the flood. During the past month there ha-ve been issued permits as under: —Drainage 32, plumbing 34. The contractor at tho rubbish tip has without giving notice ceased work, and I have had to put a man on at intervals to keep tho tip in working order. I would, therefore, recommend that tho contract be determined.
The question of the stoppage of a private drain at a house in Willis street has now been investigated. The man who did the work says that the block was in the roadway, but that he was unable to ascertain the cause, as the obstruction went away on the wire being inserted. This connection, it was found, had been blocked on a. previous occasion, when a boy's pair of trousers were taken out; therefore, under the circumstances, I have to suggest that the Council decline any liability in the matter.
During the storm of last week several large trees were blown down across the pipe track at Tiritea, and the handrail at one of the pipe bridges was broken, but no further damage was done. I have inspected the footways in Clifton street, and find that they are overgrown with grass, and otherwise require repairs. Those in College Terrace are in similar condition—the whole require to bo topdressed and repaired.
