Local enthusiasts will be pleased to hoar that an effort is being made to start an Amat/eur Boxing Club on a largo scale in <»ur midst. The object is to enable young men from sixteen years of ago in. Palmerston and surrounding districts to get almost free tuition of tho noble art. At a public meeting, called for Monday night next in another column, it is intended to devise a scheme whereby tho art of self-dofonce can bo acquired by all for tho small fee of 5s per quarter, honorary members to pay the same amount. Already fifty names have been handed in as members. Tho conveners of the meeting are well-known admirers of the English pastime, and there is every indication of their efforts being attended with success. Suitable premises are under offer to tho proposed Club. In addition to boxing- it is intended to equip the gymnasium with all the most modern appliances for physical culture and chest development, and make tho Club second to none in tho Dominion. Hon.- members will be admitted oycry evening, and each month an exhibition night for their benefit will beheld, when the parents of active members will be invited to attend.

The promoters have already received a. donation of a 16ft ring, with padded poets and rope complete. None but fulleized Boz gloves will be used at tho gym.

Bob Lang, well-known in Palmerston. had hard luck in his recent 10 rounds contest with Goodfellow in Wcstport. Only in one round did the West Coast boy'have tho advantage. Goodfellow was sent to the boards nine times during tho encounter, one in each of the third ami fourth rounds, five times in the ninth (including three times in 40 seconds), and twice in the tenth round for seven and nine seconds. The referee gave it a draw. The West Coast ccntre.e, Wcstport and Millcrton, held successful tournaments during the Easter holidays, including three bouts for boy*, which were keenly contested. Wostport is the first Association to hold boys' competitions in connection with tournaments. These centres will hold their next meetings in June, when representatives will be picked to compete at the New Zealand championships, to be held in Palmerston North in I notice they have a good feather in "Docker" White, also a good middleweight in Lcckie, cousin of Archie Leckie, of Wellington. The annual meeting, of the Manawatu Boxing Association will be held shortly, when a new committee will be formed, and officers elected for the ensuing year. It is a well known fact that tho above Association is one of the foremost in the Dominion, and the list of membership is always full. The tournaments aro keenly contested, competitors from all parts of the Dominion competing. Tho Australian heavy-weight championship will bo decided at the Stadium, Sydney, on Monday, April 11. Tommy Burns is going strong again and in great heart, working away like a Trojan. Tommy will bo in fine feather on the convincing day—the date has been altered froni the 13th, owing to the Federal elections taking place on that date. Bill Lang's manager, Mr "Billy" Williams, and hie trainer, Harry Nathan, are delighted with tho condition of the conqueror of Bob Fitzsimmons and Bill Squires, and speak of his prospect? in the most confident manner. Indeed, there ie a- strong feeling whore sports do most congregate that Lang has a great chance of success.
