THE GUFF AND VALLEY ROADS.
REPAIRS TO BE EFFECTED. During the visit of the Hon. R. Mackenzie, Minister for Public Works, to the Feilding district in September last, the opportunity was taken by the Apiti Chamber of Commerce to ask the Minister to assist in regrading and improving the dangerous portions of the Cliff and Oroua,Valley roads in the Pohangina and Kiwitea Counties. As a result of this representation a sum of £250 was placed on the estimates towards the cost of the work, the Pohangina and Kiwitea counties to provide the remaining necessary £250. At Saturday's meeting of the Pohangina County Council a letter was received from the Apiti Chamber of Commerce urging the Council to secure tho Government grant of £250. The Kiwitea County Council also wrote stating that they had passed a resolution that the engineers of the Kiwitea and Oroua County Councils confer as to the expenditure necessary oil the roads leading to the Apiti bridge, that the expenditure be pooled and met equally by the two counties interested.
It was pointed out that the Kiwitea Council considered that one estimate for the work should be made, the money provided to be pooled and spent where necessary, irrespective of which county the work is in. In the event of the full £500 not being spent refunds of balance to be made accordingly. In connection with this matter Mr T. Harland, overseer for the Pohangina County Council, reported that he had carefully inspected the roads, together with Mr Bourne, Engineer to the Kiwitea Council, and taking into consideration the position of the grant, also the financial position of the two counties, they decided they could not recommend the Councils to avail themselves of the full amount of the grant. An estimate had been prepared for taking off the most dangerous corners, paring the outer edge of the road, fencing, culverts, and metalling from the Apiti bridge to the boundary of Coal Creek and Mangipikopiko Ridings. It was agreed that the work be carried out by day labour. It was decided to contribute £1 for £1 with the Government subsidy of £125 for work on the Oroua Valley Road, and to spend same along with the Kiwitea Council as per their letter of February 24th. Contribution to be charged nine-tenths to Mangapikopiko and one-tenth to. Coal Creek.
