PERSONAL.

M D. McKillop, of Gisborne, late bandmaster of the Federal Band, and well known in band circles throughout the Dominion, died in tho Public Hospital at Gisborne on Saturday night.

Miss Rosina Buckman will probably join the ranks of Mr J. C. Williamson's new English opera company. It is reported that Miss Clarice Buckman will shortly sever her connection with Pollard's Juvenile Opera Company.

Mr E. Allsworth, J.P.. has retired from the management of the Ohakune Times, and the paper has been taken over by Mr J. H. Claridge. Mr Allsworth formerly conducted the Manakau Chronicle.

Seven applications were received by the Oroua Drainage Board for the position of Clerk to the Board. After consideration the members unanimously appointed Mr E. J. Armstrong to the position.

Rifleman George Halliday, champion shot of New Zealand, is a son of Mr W. Halliday, of Makairo, and at one timo was a pupil teacher at the Woodville school. At present he is attached to the Valuation Department at Wellington, and has been for many a consistent shot. He is a member of the Karori Rifle Club.

Ix)rd Kitchener, in continuation of his private tour of New Zealand, arrivod at Napier on Saturday evening by motor car from Auckland, via Rotorua and Taupo. Ho paid a visit to the country yesterday. The party left Napier this morning for Dannevirke, where they spend the night. The Field-Marshal will leave Wellington for Sydney on Wednesday, picking up the Vancouver boat at the latter port.

Mr F. Hockley, of Huntervillc, was a visitor to Feilding on Saturday. In conversation with a "Standard" representative Mr Hockley stated that preparations were being made by the Reform party for a big fight in Rangitikei at the general election, and he had good reason to anticipate success. It is understood that the boundaries of the Rangitikei electorate will be altered before tho next election.

An interesting personality is Mrs Evans, lessee of the railway refreshment rooms at Hawera, who was one of the band of nurses organised by Florence Nightingale to nurse the wounded in the Crimean War. Lately Mrs Evans paid a short visit to Wanganui to see her old friend, Mr Seville Thornton, who was one of the wounded under her charge in the hospital at Scutari. Though 80 years of age, Mre Evans is still active and hearty, and takes a keen interest in current events.

Interviewed at Masterton this morning Mr A. W. Hogg stated there was no foundation for the rumour that he intended to contest a seat in the Auckland district in the interests of the Labour party at the general election. He could not think of leaving a constituency like Masterton. which he looked upon as his political birthplace, and where he had been returned by such a great majority at every contested election. It would be most ungrateful to desert a constituency like that, and he had no intention of doing so.
