JOHNSON v. JEFFRIES.

(To the Editor.) Sir,—l imagine I can eoe "Bob Haricoe" smiling, thinking he hae placed me hors de combat, but 6uch is not the caee. I have turned up again, and in the best of condition, which is necessary, perhaps, considering I have a tough man to beat in Bob, and I have just finished a long bout with "Varicose," who winded me a bit, but eventually threw in the towel after a gallant contest, and m hie concluding remarks hope I have enjoyed the epar ae much as he. Well, I have enjoyed it, and I am satisfied with the 'contest and the win. But " Haricoe," I hardly know how to shape up to him, as considering he uses a wet spade, he must box under garden rules. In answer to my request that "Haricoe" would give his reason why he thinks Jeffries will beat Johnson, he admits that he cannot do so, but quotes Patrick P. Pelf, "The Man behind the Camera." Perhaps Patrick is equally bitter against the coloured race as "Bob Haricoe, who, by the way, is so intensely bitter against them that it is a wonder he does not refuse to eat an egg laid by a black hen, or to drink milk given by a black cow—"are you listening, Bob?"— Who is doing the side-stepping now? Sir, that joke ot "Harricoe's" that I may be a wellknown local coloured exponent of boxing is very amusing, as m his first letter he refers to my lamentable lack of knowledge in the noble art. But he is beaten, and badly.too, and he recognises that, but he will not admit it like a man, and how anxious he is that the local coloured exponent should not take his views personally. In conclusion, Mr Editor I consider "Bob Haricoe" has lost the contest, considering he will not come to the point at issue, but takes refuge behind Patrick P. Pelf and a wet spade. Adieu, Bob, I wish you well and I hope to see you at the New Zealand Amateur Championship contests to be held, so I hear, in Palmerston North about July.-I am, etj, D gpoRT • Palmerston, March 3.
