LIFE SAVED BY FROST.
ALL NIGHT ON THE LINE WITH SEVERED ARM. Saved from death by the frost after a shocking accident, a young man, named Harry Evans, of Long Row, Brindley Ford, near Tunstall, Staffs., walked into his in a halffainting condition, and, to the horror of his landlady, showed her that his right arm had been severed from his body. Evans spent the evening at Burtslem, and,, returning on foot, decided to cross the railway in order to make a short cut to, his home. Apparently he was seized with a sudden attack of faintness whilst crossing the line, and fell with his right arm across the metals. This was about nine o'clock at night, and the only trains which passed between that time and the following forenoon were the 9.30. p.m. passenger train to the Biddulph Valley and the 10.30 p.m. passenger train to Stoke. One of these trains must have passed over the man's arm and' severed it from the body. I'ut, strange to say, he has no recollection of the occurrence, for lie. lay there all night unconscious, and woke r.p j about seven o'clock in the morning to find himself recumbent by the railway metals, with his arm beside him. lie got up, and, leaving his arm on the line, walked to; his lodgings, a distance of nearly a mile. There was a_ keen frost during the night, and to this Evans owes a miraculous escape f rom death, as the frost arrested the bleeding to a great extent. Some time after Evans had reached his home P.G. Gierke, of Brindley Ford, was passing the railway at the stop where Ihe accident happened, and. was astounded to see a severed arm lying on the line. Completely at a loss to account ior the gruesome discovery, the officer proceeded to the village ty) make inquiries, and there for the first time learnt of Evans' extraordinary experi- ] ence. Surgical aid was procured for the injured man, and he was removed to the North Staffordshire Infirmary, where he is progressing as satisfactorily as possible under the circumstances.
