HOUSEHOLDERS' MEETING.

There was a large gathering of house homers, including a .tiur spj.inKimg oi ladies, at the meeting nelu last mghl in connection with tue proposed new school lor the western emi oi the town, 'j. he meeting was held in Mr liiacKbourn's plumbing shop, which was admirably suited I,or the purpose. Mr J. I\airn, one ot tne convenors of the meeting, was voted to the chair and briefly stated the object of the meeting. During the course ot his lcinarics Mr INairn reierred to the elfort that had been made some three years ago to start a school, and stated that the non-success of. the movement was to a great extent caused by the opposition shown by the two • other large schools in town. That objection had since been removed, as both the Campbell street and College street schools had reached their limit as far as attendance was concerned, in fact were overcrowded, especially in the lower infant classes. The population in the western end of the town had also greatly increased, and there were a large number of children in the vicinity waiting to go to school as soon as one was opened. Ho apologised for the unavoidable absence of Mr G. H. Bennett, who had promised tp give his support to the scheme when it came before the Wanganui Education Board. He also stated that ho had been assured by the other members of the Board that the movement had their support and he considered that the time was now ripe for the establishment of the school. Messrs Tasker, Rickard, Woodley, Whitehead, H. J. Canton, Weston, Mayo and other residents also expressed opinions to the effect that the matter required immediate, attention. On the motion of Mr Armstrong, seconded by -Mr Rickard, it. was decided "that a requisition containing all the necessary information bo sent to the Wanganui Education Board asking for a school for the western end of Palmerston North." / The following committe was appointed to secure lists of parents with children of school age in the district : — Eastern boundary, Cook street from the railway line to the river.—Messrs H. Young and A. Rickard. Western end, as far as Awapuni station. —Messrs J. Jamieson and J. F. Clausen. Southern boundary, Church street to the river.—Messrs J. Nairn and W. Weston. Northern boundary, along Main street from the Gasworks to Kairanga and Boundary roads.—Messrs H. J. Canton and J. Mayo. Each member of the committee was supplied with a list, and as soon as they have completed their work another meeting will be called to take further steps. Mr W. Kingsbeer was appointed secretary to the committee. It was decided to ask householders to contribute 2s 6d. each to the funds to defray preliminary expenses, any money remaining over to be placed to the credit of the school funds. -Nearly all present subscribed and a substantial amount was raised. All present seemed to enter into the proceedings with vim, and judging by the enthusiasm shown no difficulty should arise in getting the required number of names of intending scholars for the school, in fact over 50 names were hand--3d in at the meeting. At the conclusion of the meeting the committee met to make arrangements for the collection of names for the petition, which is expected to be ready in a few 3 ays. The meeting terminated with a vote }f thanks to the chairman and convenors of the meeting.
