CRICKET.

AUCKLAND BEATS CANTER BURY. AND KEEPS THE PLUNKET SHIELD. (Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, Jan. 10. The second attempt this season to wrest the Plunket Shield from the grasp of the Auckland Cricket Association has failed, the Canterbury team being beaten by seven wickets. When heavy rain fell on Saturday night and yesterday it was thought Auckland might have some difficulty to make the runs required, but this was done to-day, on a wicket which was rapidly improving, at the cost of only throe wickets. Canterbury carried its second innings score to 23S before being dismissed. Carlton carried his bat through the innings from the first wicket down, making 88. Auckland knocked up the runs required (104) in 84 minutes. The finish was sensational, for with 92 on the board, Homus hit two successive deliveries from Orchard clean over the boundary, this finishing the game. He made 4o not out. Scores were as I follow:—
