At the recent school examinations the following scholars gained proficiency certificates: —William Griffiths, Chas. Stevenson. and Lucy Seifert. Competency certificates were won by William Thompson and Thomas Stokes. The following is the list of passes below Standard VI. : Standard V. —Ross Moody, Thos. The distribution of the prizes place on the 16th inst., when about 120 books were presented by Mr J. R. Whyte, chairman of the School Committee. . , The township has been quite deserted these last few days. A large portion of the community having taken advantage of the cheap fares and gone elsewhere for Christmas. The mills closed down for a week to ten days, except Temukanui mills, which only closed for the three days. The usual Boxing Day picnic was held in Mr Jamieson's paddock and was well attended by the young folk. Games of the usual kind were indulged in and a very enjoyable day was spent. Tokomaru was also well represented at the Manawatu races.

Building operations have been very slow here for the last six mopths, but are now on the move Mr Canton is having a fine villa erected on his section, and I am informed that several more intend building at, an early date.
