THE WOOL MARKET. Dalgety and Co., Ltd., report under date, London, Sept. 24, 1909: The fifth series of colonial wool sales for the current year opened on 21st inst. Shortly after the close of the July auctions it became apparent that < users, both at Homo and on the Continent, were none too well supplied with raw material, and as the result of private sales some, 1000 or more bales were clearod of the quantity carried forward at the close of last safes. During the past month the market has continued to harden, and recently the improvement, which commenced with merinos and fine crossbreds, spread to the lower qualities, so that it seemed certain that an all-round advance would bo registered when the serieo opened, especially as the quantity to bo offered was so very moderate. Buyers arjived in large numbers for the first sale, including an unusually large contingent from the United States, considering the small quantity of wool to bo offered likely to suit their, requirements. The selection on Tuesday was indifferent, the catalogues being largely composed of New Zealand sliped wools, merinos being very poorjy represented. Competition, however, was good, and practically every lot wis cleared, prices when compared with July closing rates showing the following variations:—Merinos, 10 per cent, dearer ; fine crossbreds, 10 per cent, dearer ; medium and coarse crossbreds, 10 to 15 per cent, dearer. With a better selection of merinos on Wednesday and yesterday, it was possible to form a more accurate opinion of the improvement in these descriptions, and we now quote an average rise of 10 to 15 per cent., though frequently the best lots of scoured do not show more than 7 2 per cent, rise, while tho medium qualities are often more than 15 per cent, dearor.
