The victory o£ Soultline in the Newmarket Handicap adds one more leading Australian event to the long list of captures by New Zealand-bred horses. ISO doubt a good percentage of my readers are quite abreast of the Australian record by New Zealand horses; but it may not prove uninteresting to just, take a glance over the various lists arK * down the particulars connected therewith. Making a start from 1883, the year that "Martini-Henry came with meteor-like flash," I make the New Zcaland list of captures come out as ioilows.: —
Metropolitan Stakes: Sir Modred, Cravat, Maniapoto. Solution. A. J.C. Derby: Nordenfeldt, Bonnie Scotland, Noctuiform. A.J.C. Oaks: Pearl Shell. V.R.C. Derby : Martini-Henry, Nordenfeldt, Strathmoro, Carnage. Melbourne Cup: Martini-Henry, Carbine, Apologue. Maribyrnong Plate: Necklet. V.R.C. Oake : Pearl She 1. . Champion Stakes: Matchlock, Carbine (twice), Strathmore. Australian Cup: Lurline, Havoc. Newmarket Handicap: Ilova, bouitV.R.C. St. Leger : Martini-Henry, Matchlock, Strathmoro. Culloden. A.J.C. St. Leger: Matchlock. Caulfield Cuincas: Strathmore. Caulfield Cup: Maranui. Caulfield Futurity Stakes: Gladsome (twice). Soultline. -Breeders' Plate: Boniform. Toorak Handicap: Soultline. Svdncv Cup: Carbine (twice). A".J.C." Champagne Stakes: Carnage. Williamston Cup: Ellis. Caullicid Grand National Steeplechase: Ditto.
It will perhaps causc some readers surprise to find JLiOchiel s name oinittt'xl from winners of the; Newmarket Handicap and Australian Cup, and that of Russley from the Doncaster Handicap. It is quite true that both animals, were foaled in Now Zealand; but they come within the category of English-bred horses, and as the above list is exclusively con fined to New Zealand-bred hoises, Lochiel and Russley, to be strictly correct, must bo lMt out. A perusal of the list which I (Phaeton) have compiled shows that the name oi a New Zealand-bred horse has been entered up in connection with almost ca ci \ big ideerun at Randwick, Flemington. and Caultie Id. Two of the big jumping everus ot the Victorian turf, however, remain to be cautured by New Zealand horses, viz tb" V.R.C. Grand National Hurdle Race arid the V.R.C Grand National Steeplechase. It. will be 19 years th.s coming winter since an Auckland-owned pair (Donald and Titokowani) made an pttempt to capture the Flemington Grand National double. Donaid finished second to. Rllcrslie. while Titokowaru occupied a like position to Fearless 11. No doubt the dpuble will -some clay be mciuded •n the list, of New Zealand s captures, but it cannot be urged _ for Maonhmd that she is so powerful m the jumping department as of yore.. and that, prevents one embracing optimistic 'Views as +.-> an early Grand National capture at Flemington.
