BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The ordinary meeting of the Borough Council was held last night. There were present the Mayor (Cr J. A. Nash) and Crs. Stubbs, Armstrong, Luxford, Palmer, Haydon, Holben, Bennett, Clausen, and Matheson.

CORRESPONDENCE. From the Education Department, notifying the allocation of the subsidy for the library. From the Engineer for Roads, stating he would inspect the river at the earliest opportunity. From Superintendent of Electric Lines, stating that the Council must trim trees at its expense.—Work to be done.

From Pascal Bros., asking for further time to pay for sewer work in. order to make enquiries. From E. Penman, asking that tho water service be extended in Roy Street. From the Manawatu Employers Association, asking the Council to attend a meeting re drivers' demands. —Cr Clausen and the Engineer to act on behalf of tho Council. From G. Ward, stating that the culverts in Florence Avenxie were too small. —The Works Committee to inSP From the Ivairanga County Council, agreeing to pay half cost of lamp at 'Fitzherbert Bridge. From Manawatu Racing Club, asking for the use of water-cart #to water the course. —Granted subject to certain conditions. From C. A. Loughnan, on behalf of St. Patrick's Church, asking for remission of rates on the convent, the Zealandia Hall, and the school in Carow Street. —Rates to be collected on the convent and the Carow Street School, tho rest remitted and in the case of the Zealandia Hall .so long as it is used for educational purposes. DmJTATIONS . Messrs Payne and Ax waited upon the Council on behalf of the Orient Lodge, and asked for a remission ol the sanitary requirements in regard to connecting with the sewer.—Granted during the pleasure-of the Council. REPORT. The Public Works Committee reported having met on March 12th, 1 and made the following recommendations:—That. Messrs Pascal Bros, be informed that sewerage charge must be paid, and that they put the Foxton Lino drain in as good repair as previously, the work to be done under the supervision of the Engineer and to his satisfaction ; that the Ivawau drain be cleaned out- in four contracts; that Manawatu Street be taken over subject to certain repairs. The Committee met again yesterday, and with the Government Engineer visited the old racecourse, where bank erosion has taken plaec. After ■ inspection Mr Robinson recommended that a groyne similar to that at tho Fitzherbert Bridge be constructed at a position pointed out below the rubbish tip, the work to be done as soon as possible. , It* was decided with regard to Messrs Pascal Bros.' request that the Works Committee investigate] the whole matter and report to the Council. i .i It was decided with regard m the river protection that tenders bf- called for the construction of the groyne, labour only; also that the Engineer plant willows in the silt between the old racecourse and the bridge. It was decided that the street name boards not. yet erected should by i-ut in position at once. It was decided on Cr Bennett's motion that the Engineer inspect the culvert in Pitt Street at the eailiest opportunity.
