In consequence of the collapse of the gum market, the Austrians engaged in digging in the provinces are sending a deputation to interview Ministers in Wellington with the object of getting land set apart with a view to establishing an Austrian settlement of agriculturalists and viticulturalists. INVERCARGILL, March 27. A gratifying indication of the progress of Southland shipping was given by reports received to-day at a meeting of the Bluff Harbour Board. The shipping master reported that during February the shipping had been: —Inward, 27 vessels, of 53,427 tons; outward, 28 vessels, of 54,300 tons. This was an increase over tho corresponding period of the previous year of 7333 tons and 8547 tons respectively. The financial statement submitted by the secretary showed that the ordinary revenue for February had been £1865 2s 10d, as compared with £1902 0s 7d for the same month last year. This was an increase of £560 for the two months of the year over the same two of 1907.} The secretary also reported that the berthage dues for .the month had been £570, which is a record in tho history of the Board.
