OVERLOADING A SCOW.

AUCKLAND, March 25. Inez Soares, master of the scow Alma, was charged at the Police Court this afternoon with loading his vessel below the Plimsoll mark on one trip towards the end of last year. According to the testimony for the prosecution, Soare's vessel was lying at the railway wharf when inspected, and was found to be sitting in. the water with the load line submerged, and with only about two inches of freeboard, whereat at the least she should have shown some ten inches of freeboard. The master declared that when he left Ngunguru with 114 tons of coal on board his vessel was high enough, and he could not understand how she could have been sitting so deep as the prosecution alleged when lying at the railway wharf. After hearing; the' evidence, his Worship,decided to convict Soares and fine him £2 and costs £1 ss.
