A. Laery, at 8 o'clock to-night. Owing to the stormy woather prevailing in Wellington on Saturday, the pony races at Miramar were .postponed till next Saturday afternoon. There were a lot of visitors in town for the meeting, and our special reporter was told by Mr Chase-Morris, chairman of committee, that, good as had been the first meeting, the second would totally eclipse it in | every way. A fine day was all they required. Those who know the promising lightweight jockey, Walter ,E. Pine, would bo greatly shocked at tho news of his death, which occurred at the Wafmate races on Thursday. The deceased was apprenticed to his brother, Wm. Pino, and was the youngest, of six brothers, who have all distinguished themselves in the saddle at diifcrent times. During the Christmas holidays W. E. Pino was riding at the Manawatu and Ashhurst meetings, and later on at the Wellington Cup meeting. On Manawatu Cup day he rode Do Witte in the Fitzherbert Handicap, when that horse dead-heated with Lord Soult, and in the Gillies Hack, the next race on the programme, ho rode Grecnleaf to victory. He could go to the scaler at 6st 71b, and -on account of his quiet demeanour and appearance was a general favourite.
