FITZHERBERT BRIDGE.
(To the Editor.) Sir rl, was gladh 'to> see your, sublea'dfe SSb'n Friday r in : reference to> this matt, 2j It is quite time the two local -bdies concerned agreed to take ; the J f$ e m nan< i and make it safe for I ,'jrfiic. It™ is to be regretted that the Kairanga County Council made up their minds to block the new bridge for the Pahiatua road, as that bridge would have practically taken the great majority of the stock travelling to and from this direction, and would have given the present bridge an extended term of life. However, under present conditions, it is' absolutely necessary that a footbridge for foot passengers and cyclists be provided, and a harbour of refuge be arranged for traps meeting cattle or motors coming over the bridge. As a ruled rovers never think to see if there are any vehicles on, the bridge before allowing stock to go on and, of course, the bridge is too narrow to allow traps to turn round. It has always been a matter of surprise to me that a bad accident has not occurred owing to this cause; but sooner or later it will come, when a nervous woman meets a mob of bullocks with a touchy horse.—Yours, R. S. ABRAHAM.
