METHODIST CONFERENCE.

'By Electrio Telegraph—Copyright.) Per Press Association.

SYDNEY, June 7. The Methodist Conference discussed the proposals of London Wesleyan Methodist Society for extension of the operations of the Methodist Missionary Society in Australasia to India.

Doctor Brown moved the adoption of the recommendation of the New South Wales Conference, that the mission to India be postponed for the present on the grounds that large mission work has still to be done in the islands of the Pacific, and the extra expenditure, pointing out that the current expenditure for the past three years exceeded income by nearly £2000. Dr. Fitchett pointed out the smallness of population involved in the missions in the Pacific compared with India. The question was not only were they spending money on a good cause, but to the best effect. They were told to do the work at their doors, and measured by time India was nearer than some of the Pacific Islands. He moved an amendment providing that the Mission Board send one or more men to India to train for mission work and prepare ( for an Australasian mission, it being j left to the Mission Board, on information collected, to at once organise a permanent Australasian mission to India, or maintain a preparatory mission till next general conference.

Dr. Fitchett's amendment was carried by a large majority.
