DUNEDIN, July 24,

At the Police Court to-day Alexander Leckie, a small storekeeper in Kensington, was fined £25 and J63 18s costs for selling liquor without a license. A man was seen to enter the store, and on eoming out a constable found that he had a bottle of beer on him. The police raided the place, but failed to find liquor. The man with the beer said that he had bought it at Leciiie's, but in cross examination he was not clear on the point, as he said he was muddled at the time. Defendant denied having sold beer or having any in the place. WELLINGTON. July 24. At a meeting of citizens, presided over by the Mayor, a committee was appointed to arrange for the reception of Sir Joseph Ward on his return to Wellington.

An inquiry was held by the Magistrate and two assessors to-night into the recent stranding of the Waihi on the Wairau bar. The captain accounted for the mishap by the -sea and tide putting himput of position. The inquiry was adjourned until Saturday. NAPIER, July 24. The Hawkss Bay Kennel and Poultry Club's ninth annual Show opened to-day. The display of both dogs and poultry is the best yet seen here. The collie cup was. won by J. G. Parker (Hastings); E. T. Howell (Auckland) won the ctip for best, fox terrier dog; and J. W. Spence the cup for best fox terrier bitch. J. Jamieson won the Fox Terrier Club's gold medal for best wire-haired fox terrier; Miss Jessie Hunter (Porangahau) secured both challenge prizes for Scottish terriers; and R. H. Shepherd (Auckland) both challenge prizes for Irish terriers. In the poultry section the North Island championship for Black Orpingtons was won by W. A. Sowman, of Blenheim.
