GISBORNE, July 24.
The Collector of Customs has been advised by the lighthouse-keeper at East Island that a body has been washed ashore, probably from the wreck of the Sir Henry. Latee. The body found at East Island has been identified as that of Capt. Gromes. The heavy sea in the channel prevents the body being transferred to the mainland. It will be the first buried on the island. The rocket mystery at Gisborne on Friday night is believed to have connection with the wreckage seen from Mahia. The bodies of the three seamen of the Aotea were interred at Waipiro to-day. In regard to a statement that the friends of the missing men were in hopes that a rescue had been made by a steamer with a yellow funnel, seen the previous night, there is no doubt the boat was of the red funnel fleet —the Haupiri — which had come on to Gisborne. A telegram has been received to-night reporting that the steamer Kotare, which left Auckland for Gisborne last Wednesday, was sheltering at Whale Island yesterday.
