(From Oar Own Correspondent.) The popularity of the Oddfellows Lodge here was very apparent on the occasion of'their concert on Wednesday evening. The public hall was crowded with an enthusiastic audience, arid tht concert proved one of the best evei held here. Every item received warm applause and encores were frequent. The overtures in each part were played by Miss Isrealson, of Pahiatua, in capital style, while a violin solo by Mr Kitchen, flute solo, Master Leiz, and a step dance by Mr Burns hit the taste of the audience, also a trio by Mrs Russell and Messrs Stephens and Russell. Songs were given by Mrs Blake, and Misses Wood, Desmond, Simpson,., and Corrigan, and by \ Messrs Preston, Print, Jones, L. McCarthy, Dallow, and Doyle. Recitations were contributed by Miss Nelson, and Messrs Squire, Slipper, and Harvey; the coraie ones by Mr Harvey qpite brought down the house, and an old favourite by Mr Slipper caused much amusement. The committee — Messrs J. Scneidt, Espiner; W. Duthie, F. Jepson, D. Reid, G. Ransom, J. Cievely, Gifkins, and P. Seheidt, jun, secretary —all worked well together, and made the concert and the dance which followed so successful. Mrs F. Jepson kindly lent her piano for the evening, as the hall piano is taking a much needed rest from sheer hard work, and perhaps a little neglect. Mr John Seheidt made an efficient chairman, and Mr Madden proposed the usual vote of thanks to the performer";, especially the friends from a distance, who came so willingly to help. The accompaniments were well played by Mrs Russell, Miss Augusta Scheldt, and Miss Israelson. Before leaving on a trip to England, Mr A. S. Aldrich sold a part of his property here to Messrs Sinclair Bros. Mr Wilcox ik also leaving for the Old Coutiitry in a short time. Th? school building and teacher's residence have just been freshly painted, and are much improved in appearance. |
