Dairy Cow Competitions at our Manawatu Show.

(To tie Editor). / Sib, —Many members and visitors ibted the paucity pf entries in thedairy ;ow class at our last fixture, The } awes of the trouble were probably the unsatisfactory nature of themethod of arid prizes awarded, attention to this natter in November last, if I am correctly informed, arid f«at biftef] 'p*ae»:3tenld' Tac writer, when speaking to a Jersev enthusiast at a latfir date, suggested that breeders should offer special prizes for dairy cow contests in which nc animal would be eligible for competition unless its sire was a pare bred registered* beast. Tte friend agreed il would be a desirable plan and would be lively to do good. Others interested in the question hare concurred in_ this view, and just this week one of th< most prominent breeders in this colonj and a remarkably man expressed the same opinion. The only proof acceptable as to th< purity of breeding of the sire would b< his acceptance . for registration by th< representative breed association. I will pay breeders of pure-bred stock o high olass dairy quality todonafc liberally in prize money on such condi tions since it will, lead factory supplier! arid dairymen, generally; to take i greater interest in the competitions ari< also in securing pure-bred Sires to their ' herda. It should also _c wis* keener competition for grade;heifer sired by pure-bred registered sires since only will have a chance fo obtaining thv ,we. Under the proposed conditions, 11 course of time, our sons will be able t look back and find some guide as t how to breed for the dairy, but from tb results of the past nothing can b gathered. There is no record of valu to anyone, and there cannot be unde ainy system where cows of unknow: breeding may compete and where mil values are not recorded. Better prize will induce suppliers to test their nerd for a likely winner and cause town* people to pay more for a proved cov which the children may hope to se wearing the winner's colours. I note in your issue of 2nd inst. ths a member has given notice of motion i conncction with a proposed dairy co competition. It is questionable, wrietlie owners of exceptionally good v animal will be willing to send them .away fc ten days. They will probably prefer i have them milked at home in tfc presence of two or more stewards of tb Association. —I am, etc., A. Buchaxast," "Jersey Holme.' Palmerston I?ortb, April 3.
