Erection of a Weighbridge

The Exhibition deputation brought the question of a weigh-bridge before the Borough Council last night. Mr Nash said that a deputation from the Chamber of Commerce had previously waited upon the Council in regard to this matter. At that time a letter from Messrs McMurray and Co., asking permission to construct a bridge, was received, and as it filled in with the desires of that deputation and there seemed a probability of the Council granting the request, the deputation did. not proceed further. Howeve>, the request was refused by the Council, and the deputation now desired the Council to erect a municipal weigh-bridge. Mr Nash suggested the corner opposite the Council office as a convenient site, since the bridge could then be attended to by a clerk in the office without addition to the staff. He thought the cost of erection would be from J6BO to JGIOO, and that it would be found a source of revenue to the borough. Beplying to Cr Dunk, Mr Nash said that he estimated the revenue at about i£so to £75 annually. He thought merchants would be using it all day long. ' ; The Mayor said the deputation would be apprised at a later date of 'the. decision of the Council, and the members, after thanking the Council, withdrew. Consideration was then given by the Council. Cr Dunk proposed, and Cr Abrahams seconded, that a public weighbridge be erected by the Council. Cr 'Dunk said there was no doubt as to . the urgent need of the bridge, even if it cost up to £250. The returns from it would reduce the outlay to a minimum even during the first couple of years. Crs Abrahams, Matheson, Sinclair and Stubbs alsoexpressed their concur-

rence with the motion, which was carried without dissent. -

The question of site and other details was left to the Public Works Committee to. decide. ; .
