The Auckland Collision.
s (Per I'ress Association.) VfJCKLAND, Jan. 24. The inquest on the bodies recovered after the collision between the Claymore and Kfpanr.i was continued today. In the co irso of his evidence, Captain Souliigate, of the Kapanui, stated that he ronld not go inside the Gael on the day of the collision as he would have hnd to pass over minefields, against which Wellington authorities liad warned -naster mariners. The j Coroner remarked that if this statement had been made at the Marine inquiry, it might have had an important effect on the decision. AUCKLAND, Jan. 25. The inquest on the recovered bodies of tho victims of the Ivapanui disaster, which occurred in tho Harbour, off North Head, on the night of December 23rd, concluded to-day. The jury brought in a verdict that the deatn of Clarke was due to crushing, while that of Heavey and Fletcher was due to drowning, and that the deaths of all three were occasioned by the improper navigation of Jas. Southgate, then captain of the Kapanui. Captain Southgate was then arrested - on a charge of manslaughter and was taken before a Justice of the Peace and released on bail, to appear befor® the Police Court to-morrow morning.
